Virat Kohli on why Kuldeep and Chahal will be lethal at 2019 World Cup

first_imgIndia cricket team captain Virat Kohli has talked up the importance of having the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in India’s squad for the 2019 World Cup, starting May 30.Kohli, speaking to India Today on Thursday, said Kuldeep and Chahal are going to be more lethal than ever, considering the World Cup format where all teams face the other nine in a round-robin group-stage format.”Of course, it’s going to be our main strength (the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep and Chahal). We are going to play one team at one time. It’s not like a bilateral series where they can figure the variations out and come back in the next game. We are playing a different team every game,” Kohli told India Today.Kuldeep and Chahal have established themselves as India’s go-to-spinners in the limited-overs format of the game. India, it is safe to say, moved away from finger spinners after their inability to pick up wickets in the middle overs, especially in the Champions Trophy tournament in 2017.While selection committee chairman MSK Prasad said the veteran duo of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja would be rotated while getting Kuldeep and Chahal in the squad, the two wrist-spinners cemented their place with wickets in the middle overs and made it difficult for the finger spinners to return to the playing XI in ODIs and T20Is.Ever since forging a wrist-spin combination in the ODI squad, Kuldeep and Chahal have picked up 153 wickets between them in 81 matches. The two spinners were lethal in India’s historic ODI series win South Africa last year and went on to trouble batsmen in overseas conditions, let alone at spin-friendly home tracks.advertisementStressing Kuldeep and Chahal’s ability to strike consistently in the middle overs has helped India’s bowling at the death, Kohli added: “I mean, we have to give credit to both of them. The things that they have done in the last two years since they came into the team have been outstanding. The two youngsters to come out and bowl with such confidence and such flair. That’s actually been the most important factor for us, winning so many games.”They are taking wickets in the middle overs. That’s something we were lacking for a long, long time before. We never struggled in the death overs because of what they do in the middle overs. It’s all about bowling partnerships. They have come into the team beautifully and doing the job beautifully for us.”Also Read | Unfortunate to see so many people going after MS Dhoni: Virat Kohli to India TodayAlso Read | Delighted to have Vijay Shankar in India’s World Cup team: Virat Kohli to India TodayAlso Read | Indian dressing room like a living room, everyone relaxed: Virat Kohli to India TodayAlso See:last_img
