Checkatrade Trophy draw results as Arsenal and Chelsea find out opponents

first_img 2 Lincoln City defeated Shrewsbury Town in last season’s Final at Wembley Lincoln City will begin the defence of their Checkatrade Trophy against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the group stage of this season’s competition.Following on from the success of the previous two seasons, there are 16 ‘invited’ teams competing alongside the 48 English Football League sides from League One and League Two. 2 The invited clubs come from those with category A academy status and must field under-21 sides, with Arsenal opting in to the competition for the first time.In a slight tweak, only two players over the age of 21 who have more than 40 senior appearances can feature for invited clubs.Wolves were drawn alongside Lincoln and well as Mansfield Town and Scunthorpe United.Manchester City will face beaten finalists Shrewsbury Town in northern Group D with fellow Premier League sides Leicester City, Everton and Newcastle United also in the northern half of the draw. The Chelsea Under-21 team were knocked out in the semi-finals against Oxford United last season Arsenal will mark their debut in the Checkatrade Trophy in Group E of the southern section, coming up against Cheltenham Town, Coventry City and Forest Green Rovers.Chelsea reached the semi-finals last season and will face Newport, Plymouth and Swindon in Group C.Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Southampton, Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion are also involved.last_img
