A ‘Magic Box’ For Your Passivhaus

first_imgUPDATED on March 13, 2015By designing a tight envelope with thick insulation, Passivhaus designers work hard to whittle a home’s space heating load to a bare minimum. Many European designers strive to get the heating load so low that all space heat can be provided by raising the temperature of the ventilation air.In a home with an area of 1,600 square feet and a ventilation rate of 0.3 ac/h, ventilation air flow is only 64 cfm. Since Passivhaus designers try to keep the temperature of the ventilation air below 122°F (or, according to some sources, 131°F), it’s hard to pack much heat into the small volume of air that flows through typical ventilation ducts. That’s why it’s such a challenge to insulate a building’s shell well enough to deliver all of a home’s heat through its ventilation system. In central Europe, where winter temperatures are much milder than they are in Minnesota or Maine, some designers have succeeded in supplying all of the space heat needed for a Passivhaus through ventilation ducts. In most cases, these homes are equipped with a “magic box” — the nickname for a combination appliance that includes a heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) and an air-source heat pump. Typically, the heat pump’s evaporator coil is located in the ventilation exhaust duct, downstream from the HRV, where the coil can scavenge heat from the exhaust air before it leaves the building. Many (but not all) of these magic-box appliances also include a hot water tank. Such appliances use the air-source heat pump to heat domestic hot water; in most cases, the tank includes electric-resistance backup. Some manufacturers (including Zehnder) design their magic-box appliance around a ground-source heat pump instead of an air-source heat pump.I’ve heard rumors that magic-box appliances are beginning to become… Sign up for a free trial and get instant access to this article as well as GBA’s complete library of premium articles and construction details. Parliamentary panel rules out passage of Lokpal Bill in Monsoon Session

first_imgThe Select Committee of Rajya Sabha, which has been looking into the Lokpal Bill, has ruled out the possibility of the passage of the anti-corruption law in the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament, as demanded by Team Anna.Even as Team Anna started a fresh round of agitation on Wednesday seeking the passage of a strong Lokpal Bill, the chairman of the parliamentary panel, Satyavrat Chaturvedi, said, “We will not be able to meet the deadline of the last week of the monsoon session. The committee was constituted a bit late… We will broad base suggestions.”Indicating that the government was not bothered by Team Anna’s latest onslaught, Chaturvedi said, “Activists have there own agenda and I don’t want to appeal to them. They cannot challenge the independence of the House. The House is supreme… Other views too need to be respected. There is no point appealing to them. They can do what they like.”Reacting to the Congress leader’s remark, veteran activist Anna Hazare said, “They have always done this. They don’t have the will and they don’t want to bring the Lokpal Bill. Does it take one-and-a-half years to bring such a bill?””Even after repeated assurance from the prime minister, the government is still not creating the Lokpal body. It is not that we like to sit on anshan every now and then,” he said justifying the need for another round of indefinite strike, which started at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday.Hazare’s key aide Arvind Kejriwal said Team Anna was resolute to fight a conclusive battle with the government to tame corruption by facilitating the creation of a Lokpal body. “It will be a decisive battle against corruption. We will not get up before we get a solution this time,” he said.advertisementlast_img read more

Hazard Real Madrid move is my dream

first_imgEden Hazard admits he faces a difficult decision on whether to renew his Chelsea contract or fulfil his childhood dream of playing for Real MadridAt 27 years old, Hazard has approached the peak period of his playing career and had been strongly linked with a switch to Real in the summer transfer window to replace the Juventus-bound Cristiano Ronaldo. But a move to Los Blancos didn’t materialise with Hazard instead remaining at Chelsea for this season. The Belgian winger has got off to a stunning start under new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri with seven goals and three assists in eight Premier League appearances. However, due to his contract expiring in less than two years time, Hazard must now make the hard decision on where his future lies.“I can talk now. If they come to me, I will talk. Maybe (it is a surprise they haven’t come to me yet),” replied Hazard on the Evening Standard, when asked if he wants to delay any Chelsea contract talks.“I don’t want to say that I am not talking (at all) with the club or the owner. I am talking a lot with them. So we just need to find a good…“I don’t know (what the time frame will be). I am happy and I don’t need anything (to make me stay). It is not trophies. Of course, when you play, you want to win but I just want to enjoy things on the pitch, like I am at the moment. Then I am happy.”Heading into the final few minutes here then, we still have that two goal advantage! 👍0-2 [88′] #SOUCHE pic.twitter.com/dvLluVprIXRoberto Firmino, LiverpoolVirgil van Dijk praises Roberto Firmino after Liverpool’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Virgil van Dijk hailed team-mate Roberto Firmino after coming off the bench to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 comeback win against Newcastle United.— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) October 7, 2018Hazard is aware that he may only have one big move left in his playing career at the age of 27 and confessed that Real remain firmly on his mind to this day.Hazard added: “That’s why I spoke after the World Cup and said that I think it is time to change because I played a great World Cup. I am playing good football.“Real Madrid is the best club in the world. I don’t want to lie. It is my dream since I was a kid. I was dreaming about this club.“Sometimes I wake up and think I want to go. Sometimes I think I want to stay. It is a hard decision. It is my future.“I don’t want to talk about this every day. I don’t have time but we will talk about my future soon. I think so.”Hazard also added that he hopes to not depart Chelsea in the same manner as fellow Belgian Thibaut Courtois, who completed a £35m switch to Real and is now widely regarded as a hate figure among the club’s fans.“I don’t want that. I want what’s good for me but I want what’s good for the club because the club has given me everything. I don’t want to say, ‘yes I am signing a new contract’ and then I don’t end up signing.
