The best of the native bred three-year-old fillies will hold centre stage at Caymanas Park today in the 77th running of the Caribbean Choice Jamaica Oaks over 2000 metres and given the presence of a top heavy favourite in NUCLEAR AFFAIR, victory for her should be a mere formality.Offering a total purse of $3 million, this the season’s third classic has attracted 10 starters, including the first eight past the post in the April 9 Post to Post 1000 Guineas, which saw the howling favourite, NUCLEAR AFFAIR, powering home by 9 1/4 lengths from A THOUSAND STARS and SORRENTINO’S STAR in a fast 1:39.2 for a mile.NUCLEAR AFFAIR was then ridden by three-time champion, Dane Nelson, who left the island last week for another riding stint in Canada. Her connections have called up big-race jockey Shane Ellis, the reigning champion, to replace Nelson, who will be back to ride her in the derby.Unbeaten in three starts this season, NUCLEAR AFFAIR has already stamped herself as an exceptional three-year-old filly and Subratie is looking beyond the Oaks to the June 25 derby where she will come face to face with the colts.GLORIOUS UNCERTAINTY”She has everything in her favour today, having beaten seven of her opponents in the Guineas. But she still has to go out there and execute for racing is a sport of glorious uncertainty,” said Subratie, who is seeking his first Oaks win, having finished second with the 99-1 outsider ZACAPA some years ago.”She has done everything asked of her this season and I was particularly pleased with how she carried herself at exercise last Sunday morning in a six-furlong gallop, looking pretty easy in 1:14.4.”Nuclear Affair can do anything … she can run with the pace or come from behind if the situation demands and I am confident she will deliver for her deserving owner Michros,” he added.”It is only left to be seen whether my other runner, Golden Glory, can complete the exacta after finishing fifth in the Guineas. She did not have much luck in running, however, and my hope is that she can beat the runner-up, A Thousand Stars, and the third horse, Sorrentino’s Star, for second, with Ameth Robles who rode Zacapa taking the ride,” said the second generation trainer. For me, NUCLEAR AFFAIR, a chestnut filly by Nuclear Wayne out of Commandra Affair, bred by her owner, is so much better than her opponents that it will take an act of God to deny her today. The Wayne DaCosta-trained A THOUSAND STARS, a fast improving sort, should follow her home, again.Other firm fancies on the 12-race programme are CAMPESINO to repeat in the third race for open allowance horses; last year’s Oaks winner, MOM’S STUDENT, in the fourth; SOUND OF MIRACLE in the fifth; RUNAWAY GAL in the sixth for the Ricochet Cup; PROLIFIC PRINCESS in the seventh; and LORD EQUUS in the ninth.
Madewini murder…Rayon Jones, 20, of Lot 121 Fourth Street, Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) was on Tuesday remanded to prison for the brutal stabbing to death of mechanic Puranand Baljit, also known as “Andrew” at Madewini, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD).The charge, which was read by Magistrate Judy Latchman, stated that on June 9, 2016, at Madewini, EBD, he murdered Baljit during the course of a burglary. Jones was not required to plea to the indictable charge. He was represented by Attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who told the court that Jones has a reputed wife with a minor child and also has no prior or pending convictions.Rahamat made an application for the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) to be a paper committal, based on what was related by her client. She explained that this may be the best option to expedite the trial in the High Court.Jones was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court for July 5.On June 9, 25-year-old Baljit was reportedly stabbed seven times to his body while lying in his bed at about 22:00h.He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. At the time of the stabbing incident, the young man’s father and stepmother were at home and heard a moaning sound coming from his room and it was then they realised something terrible had happened.Jones was arrested on Sunday in Georgetown and during interrogation, he confessed to the crime. He reportedly told detectives that he had been monitoring the movements of Baljit for quite some time. On the night of the murder, he went to the house and as the occupants retired to bed he made his move.He admitted walking towards the young man’s bedroom window and as he looked into the bedroom, he saw several phones on a table. The young man, he said, was asleep. The suspect recounted that he collected a concrete block which he used to climb through the window. However, while in the bedroom, Baljit woke up and a scuffle ensued between them.During the scuffle, the suspect claimed that he was chopped to the hand by the now dead man and in retaliation; he collected another knife and dealt one blow to the young man’s neck.As Baljit collapsed on the bed, he continued to stab him. He then took a phone and a laptop computer and escaped through the window.
9 May 2011African countries should now focus on converting optimism in the continent’s future into action, business and government leaders said during the closing session of the 21st World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town on Friday.“The mood has changed from thinking of Africa as a forgotten continent to Africa as a continent that holds hope,” said Bank of Botswana governor Linah Mohohlo. “But we cannot afford to be complacent.”Mohohlo called on African countries to be much more welcoming to investors and to “quickly learn how to manage the risks” that would inevitably increase as more international capital flowed into the continent’s economies.“What we have to pursue with vigour is inclusive growth that will generate additional opportunities and contribute immensely towards poverty reduction.“And we must include women,” Mohohlo added, “because when you educate a woman, you educate a village, a society, a country and, ultimately, the continent.”Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Added Hailemariam Desalegn said the continent needed to build capacity at all levels in order “to deliver and discharge its policies and responsibilities”.Nestle board chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe said the first question was “whether Africa’s economic boom will allow it to break the cycle of poverty”, while KPMG International chairman Timothy Flynn said the real challenge was “how do we accomplish the things [we have to do] and get people to come together.”Flynn said that, in light of what he had learned about the increasing efforts to deepen African regionalisation, he would accelerate the integration of his company’s businesses across the continent.Eskom Holdings chairman Mpho Makwana said African countries should focus on developing their skills and human resources, especially by harnessing the talents of Africans in the Diaspora. “We need to make the building of robust private sectors an urgent priority and promote true entrepreneurship, because that is how jobs are created,” Makwana said.Oando Nigeria group chief executive Jubril Tinubu said it was also critical for African countries to improve their educational systems, in order to ensure that they had the skills they would need to pursue the opportunities that were emerging.Source: World Economic Forum

The WWC – World Wide Cache sends players on an intercontinental puzzle-solving adventure. You start and end in Portugal. The first cache in this Multi-Cache is GC1DZFC. From there you journey to America, Africa, Australia and Asia before heading back to Portugal.Worried about the cost of all the airline tickets? You don’t need to flex your credit card to complete this cache. Most (if not all) of those who take on this Multi-Cache never leave their home county. They build a network of teams with members near each leg of the cache. Each cache contains the coordinates to the next.WWC – American Leg of World Wide Cache SPY_Team created the cache. Rui, from SPY Team, says his 13 year old son encouraged him to create the five physical caches around world. It took four months to bring all the teams together and place the caches. Rui says, “I think the most amazing thing about this cache was the team work.”He says the response to the cache has been powerful, “Many people working together to find the last cache. It was the most beautiful moment in Geocaching, seeing all those people working together to find the five caches and finally celebrating the global find.”Cache Fan, The Spindoctors, Earthquake5683, and JAKKTeam placed and maintain the other caches. They say it takes coordination and a focused approach. Cache Fan says the reward is in the interaction with other cachers, “It is also very exiting for the Geocachers seeking the caches of the series to get into contact with cachers from other countries to share stories and tips.”The geocachers who’ve completed the cache say the key is team work. The Connect Home Pro is available for $250 per unit, Samsung has not announced any bundle plans for the higher-end model.Samsung is making Connect Home a central part of its smart home appliances. It can act as a hub for all compatible Internet of Things (IoT) devices, meaning customers will not have to buy a separate SmartThings hub anymore.Dialing in with the Connect appUsers will be able to control smart home devices through the Connect app. Samsung is planning to add support for their personal assistant, Bixby, so users will be able to tell their phone to change device settings. The Connect Home has built-in support for Zigbee and Z-Wave standards. That makes it compatible with most smart home devices, including Philips Hue LED lights, Nest smoke detector, and Ring video doorbell. As we start to add more connected devices to our homes, mesh Wi-Fi networks will become all the more necessary to avoid connectivity issues. There’s no getting around it: the way marketers and retailers harness the power of big data can be a little on the creepy side. An innocent Google search on a specific subject can often result in you seeing nothing but targeted ads on that subject for the rest of the week wherever you turn. Yet the truth is that the large sets of data collected on you – and everyone else that has a presence on the internet – isn’t for some nefarious purpose. When it comes to e-commerce, for example, the use of big data can have an enriching effect on your ability to find the things you need, easier and more quickly. Here are the non-creepy advantages of big data when it comes to e-commerce.Data Results in PersonalizationBig data can be disconcerting when it’s used to serve up targeted ads when you’re not actively shopping. However, when you are looking for a specific product or service, it’s beneficial for e-commerce sites to have as much data on your internet habits as possible, as this means it will take a lot less time to find what you’re looking for by personalizing your search results. This is in your best interest — customers that find what they need are happy customers — as well as in the best interest of the site.Tailoring results to what an e-commerce site thinks you’re looking for can be hit or miss, of course. If there’s not enough data, it’s harder to extrapolate — but a well-tuned algorithm, working with lots of data points, can be incredibly accurate. Instead of spending half an hour scrolling listlessly through an e-commerce site for what you need, you can find it in just a few minutes with big data algorithms feeding you targeted search results instead. Amazon is probably the leading e-commerce site when it comes to using big data for products’ recommendations. Its “customer who bought this item also bought…” feature has proven to be extremely effective and highly appreciated by the users over the years. Simply put, big data means personalization, and that means a better overall shopping experience.Evaluating ProductsIt’s no coincidence that nearly every e-commerce site out there, from Amazon to Zappos, encourages customers to provide detailed feedback on their purchases. Sometimes this feedback just tells you how satisfied a customer was by offering a rating — something that has garnered 4.5 stars is likely better than one that’s only gotten 3 stars, for instance. But it often goes much further than that, as customers often leave detailed reviews to tell prospective shoppers the specific benefits and drawbacks of a particular product. This is, of course, a form of big data — hundreds, if not thousands of reviews, collated and analyzed in aggregate, in order to find an overall rating. Appropriately enough when it comes to user reviews, the bigger the data set, the better; a single one-star review might be a fluke, but dozens could indicate that the product you’re looking at isn’t going to be a good buy. Without big data crunching the numbers for you and presenting it to you in an easily understood format, you wouldn’t have the ability to weed out bad products before you buy them.Spending LessE-commerce is already a great way to save money while shopping. Whether it’s clothes, electronics, childcare items, pet supplies, or anything else you can think of, shopping online provides access to lower prices overall. Even the only downside to online shopping — the wait to receive your order — has been cut down considerably, thanks to expedited shipping options like Amazon Prime’s guaranteed 2-day delivery.Meanwhile, applying big data analytics to e-commerce means that you can find even more opportunities for savings. You can’t be expected to check dozens or even hundreds of sites yourself for the best deals on a single item, but big data analytics can do the job for you. Some popular tricks I use for that matter are Honey, a chrome app with millions of users intended to apply coupon codes to your purchase, and deal aggregator Best Deals Today, that provides access to discounts from around the web.The More, the MerrierThe more information you can provide for big data-driven analytics, the better these e-commerce sites can serve you and your needs. You can’t get that from a brick-and-mortar store, and that’s one of the reasons brick-and-mortar shops are struggling to last in the online era. Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Turks and Caicos, April 28th 2017: The Police Commissioner’s report gives a lowered number for reported crimes in the past year in the Turks and Caicos. In listing his figures the Top Cop reported an up in the number of possession of drug cases, with a total of 97 cases for the year, with 24 cases recorded with the intent to supply. With regards to Burglary and Aggravated Burglary, a total of 703 were reported this year, 45 of which he says were aggravated. In 2015 this figure stood at 65 burglaries. His statements say 134 robberies were recorded, with Providenciales accounting for 130. Ninety Six (96) of these robberies involved the use of a firearm, while some involved more than one individual with a firearm taking the number of firearms used to commit robberies to 111. Compared to 2015, only 19 robberies were recorded. In answering questions to this 111 firearms figure, the commissioner attributed this to “a very small group of persons committing multiple offences. Belief is that we have a very small number of very dangerous career criminals who will stop at nothing to steal and rob”.Meanwhile, a total of 521 persons were arrested, while 271 of them were charged and reprimanded before the courts. One hundred and Fifty arrested account for local males, while 98 account for foreign males arrested. In his report, the Commissioner attributed the root cause of these crimes to the large numbers of undocumented individuals living in illegal and unregulated housing, issues he says will be tackled this year.#MagneticMediaNews#TCICrimeStatistics Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items:
