Address by his excellency, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, to the Asia-Africa Summit 2015, Jakarta, IndonesiaYour Excellency President Joko WidodoYour Excellencies the Heads of State and GovernmentYour Excellencies the Heads of delegationLadies and Gentlemen,I wish to express, on my own behalf and on behalf of the delegation of the Republic of South Africa, appreciation and gratitude for the hospitality and courtesies accorded by the President, Government and People of the Indonesia since our arrival in this beautiful city of Jakarta. His Excellency, President Joko Widodo, and the Government of Indonesia deserve to be applauded for convening this conference at this crucial juncture in the history of the world. The year 2015 marks the confluence of both the 60th anniversary of the spirit of Bandung and the adoption of South Africa’s premier document, the Freedom Charter, and the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.Your Excellencies,60 years ago in 1955, as the shackles of colonialism were being cast off, the founding fathers of our liberation movements of Africa and Asia convened in Bandung. They gathered here in Indonesia to reflect on the role of emerging nations in securing peace in the global arena, achieving economic development, and assigning colonialism and racism to the dustbin of history. The core principles of the spirit of the Bandung Conference were political self-determination, mutual respect for sovereignty, non-aggression, non-interference in internal affairs and equality. While we celebrate that much of the noble ideals of Bandung have been accomplished, we must guard against complacency. The spirit of Bandung remains unrealized until we universally eradicate poverty, underdevelopment, inequality, extremism and racial and gender discrimination.Your Excellencies,South Africa’s international relations philosophy is premised on the principles of the Freedom Charter launched on 26 June 1955 by the African National Congress, a few months after the return of our two delegates from the Bandung Conference. Our Freedom Charter demands that “There shall be peace and friendship”.As a result, our posture is based on the commitment to the struggle for a humane, just, equitable, democratic and free world, in pursuit of a better Africa and a better world.Your Excellencies,This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the United Nations. As we observe this milestone, the world remains confronted by the challenges of unequal development and conflict in many regions and within states. A further challenge is that the multilateral financial and political institutions remain untransformed. In this connection, South Africa adds its voice to the calls made at this historic gathering to fast-track the transformation of the global governance system. This particularly applies to the United Nations Security Council. We need to reflect on the importance of an inclusive, transparent, reformed, strengthened, and effective multilateral system that is able to better address the urgent global challenges of sustainable development today. The reform that urgently needs to be implemented must reflect the realities of the new global paradigm. It surely is incongruous that the majority of the world’s population is only periodically represented at the apex of the global institution.Your Excellencies,The plight of the Palestinian people remains a blight on our collective conscience. It is incumbent that we redouble our efforts to bring peace to that troubled Holy Land and have two independent and viable states of Palestine and Israel existing in peace with each other and with the whole world. We are convinced that only sincere negotiations between the Palestine and Israel can secure the peace and security that we all yearn for. We therefore call for an end to the siege on Gaza and an immediate end to the expansion of settlements.Your Excellencies,Let me once again express our sincere gratitude to the Government and People of Indonesia for your hospitality during our time here. I also wish to extend a personal word of gratitude to President Joko Widodo, for his visionary leadership in convening this special occasion.I commend you on this great initiative, which is testament once more of the strong solidarity that exists between the Governments and People of Africa and Asia.Long Live the Spirit of Bandung . Long Live the Africa – Asia Solidarity!Issued by Government Communications (GCIS) on behalf ofThe Presidency23 April 2015

On top of non-stop action and beautiful weather there has been some romance at the 2007 X-Blades National 18 Years and Under Championships.Referee Aaron McRoberts chose a photo shoot on the first day of the tournament to propose to his girlfriend and fellow referee, Jillian Donoghue. Aaron said he decided to pop the question in front of all the referees because they were all friends of Jillian and himself. “I wanted her to be surprised in front of her friends. I wanted her to be happy and feel comfortable,” he said. Aaron and Jillian have only been together for eight months. They met through Touch Football – Jillian is Aaron’s refereeing coach! The couple, from south-east Victoria, has already decided that they will be married in November. “She told me two weeks ago that I had to buy the rings but I played dumb. I hid it and said I didn’t have enough money but I’d already bought the rings by then anyway so it was just a matter of hiding them to get up to Coffs Harbour from Victoria,” Aaron said. Jillian said that neither of them was the authoritarian at home but Aaron admitted his soon-to-be wife kept him under control. Aaron said he was much more nervous about the proposal than officiating Australia’s best junior Touch Footballing talent. “She almost caught me this morning trying to get the ring into the bag. I was very nervous asking her. When I stood up my legs were shaking. You only get to do it once…hopefully!” The message about the happy couple’s engagement was spread around the stadium by Tony ‘The Blackest Cat’ Eltakchi on the PA system. Unfortunately Tony confused the message and ‘accidentally’ announced that TFA Game Development Officer and Level 6 Referee Glen Richardson was the one that had proposed.“A couple of the referees have just been engaged,” he said. “We believe one of the referees was Glen Richardson but we are not sure who the other guy is.” Jillian a Level 6, and Aaron a Level 4, are looking forward to continuing their involvement in the game in the future…may they have many happy “duals” in the future…

ESPN/SmithFormer Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling was fired by ESPN last month after a series of controversial social media posts – and he’s made it clear that he isn’t exactly impressed with the network’s decision. One of his former coworkers isn’t exactly impressed with Schilling’s take on the whole matter.Stephen A. Smith, who is a lightning rod for controversy himself, took some shots at Schilling on the SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio show. He also challenged him to a debate regarding Schilling’s firing – noting that he’d need ESPN’s permission. Smith repeatedly mentions that Schilling’s unwillingness to listen to his employer is what lost him his job.“You (Schilling) want to sit here and have a debate about what really went on?” an indignant SAS asked. “Name the time and place and I’ll show up, with the permission of ESPN — of course. I guess listening to my boss makes me a bad guy. Well guess what? I’d rather be bad than stupid.”“I can’t stand people who worked for ESPN that depart from ESPN clearly harboring whatever bitterness they harbor and try to throw talent under the bus — like talent has something to do with them being gone,” Smith said on SXM. “I have nothing to do with it.”“Let me speak up on behalf of ESPN when I say this to Curt Schilling: …You are gone not because you have conservative views instead of liberal views. Your ass is gone because you did not want to listen,” Smith said on SXM. “ESPN tells me to shut-up, they’re my employer whether I like it or not. If I want to keep my job, I’ve got to shut the hell up.”Smith is clearly playing the company man card, for whatever it’s worth. It’s an interesting take from someone who has gotten himself in trouble with his employer before.Either way, we’d love to see this debate. We doubt it’ll ever come to fruition, however.[NY Daily News]
