The Ocean City Fishing Club’s pier at 14th St is not only a fine place to fish, it’s a great structure to photograph or paint. For surf or bay fishermen, there is nothing like the comfort and camaraderie that comes with dropping a line off a pier. And Ocean City is blessed with some of the best places to do that in South Jersey, and perhaps the entire East Coast.“Pier fishing has its advantages,” said Mike Shepherd, longtime Press of Atlantic City fishing writer, “with probably the key thing being to go back to a good spot and getting to know the people you see there and making friendships.”Pier fishing also provides the opportunity to spread out, relax in a comfortable folding chair and while away a few hours in search of seafood, or just a challenging catch. The most famous spot for doing so locally is the Ocean City Fishing Club’s pier at 14th St and the Boardwalk, but there are other public and private docks, bridges and piers all over the city on both the bay and ocean sides of the island. Finding these spots, either through trial and error or word of mouth, can be half the fun. We don’t have the space here to describe them all. We’ll leave that up to our intrepid readers. But we will mention a few choice locations that should fuel a fisherman’s (or woman’s) quest for a “tight line.”14th St. “Ocean fishing off a pier can be really enjoyable, and of course you have one of the best in the Fishing Club’s pier,” Shepherd said. “That is a pier with quite a history to it.”In 2016, the private Ocean City Fishing Club will be celebrating its 103rd season, making it the oldest continuously operated fishing club in the United States, according to its website. They didn’t survive that long by being less than an ideal location. For an experienced angler it is obvious but still bears mentioning, said Shepherd, author of the “Shep on Fishing” column and Facebook website: “You are a few hundred feet out over the ocean. That means 40 or 50 feet deeper water. It’s usually better than surf fishing (from the beach).”The actual length of the picturesque pier, which is one of the most photographed and illustrated structures in Ocean City, is 635 feet from its boardwalk entrance. That translates to more species of fish, bigger runs and more fun, he said.“Kingfish, summer flounder, bluefish and stripers (the sought after striped bass) are a few species that run through there pretty regularly,” Shepherd said. For membership information, stop by the pier or write Ocean City Fishing Club, PO Box 1215, Ocean City, NJ 08226.Ocean City – Longport Bridge PierWhen a new bridge linking Ocean City with Egg Harbor Twp. Was built about a decade back, the powers that be made a decision that warmed the hearts of local anglers: a section of the old bridge was retained and repurposed as a fishing pier.“That is a unique spot for the Great Egg Harbor inlet,” Shepherd said. “You can often catch tuna there, which is not common for the inlet.”Judging from the close to a dozen people fishing there recently on a cold weekday, the word is out.Corson’s InletThe Rush Chattin Bridge is technically not a pier, but a real haven for locals and vacationers alike at the South End of Ocean City.Weakfish and stripers are the big attraction there, according to Shep. The place gets a lot of action from fishermen at night. On a summer night at the height of the season, the roads around the bridge are crowded with vehicles and people angle for the best locations on the structure as well as for the fish.Ninth St.The fishing pier is one of the design features of the new Causeway bridge, which celebrates its fourth anniversary this year. The old Causeway was a popular spot for those who like to fish the bay for generations. However, the new pier is more spacious and much safer, with dedicated parking and a location far removed from the roadway. So there you have today’s fish story: just a few places where fishermen and women can enjoy dropping a line off a pier in Ocean City and environs. Any bait or tackle shop or local angler can probably provide a few more choice locations or simply leave it up to your own inner explorer. Chances are you won’t go home empty-handed.
La Liga is considering legal action after the postponed El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid was rescheduled for 18 December by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).The match was set for 12:00 BST on Saturday in Barcelona but was postponed at La Liga’s request due to fears of civil unrest. There was a week of protests in Barcelona after nine Catalan separatist leaders were jailed earlier this month but La Liga had proposed 4th December. Both clubs put forward Wednesday, 18th December after being asked to agree on a new date by RFEF’s competitions committee, who signed off the decision on Wednesday. The first round of the Copa del Rey is set to take place on the same date.“La Liga doesn’t agree with the competition committee’s decision to stipulate 18 December – after an agreement was reached between Barcelona and Real Madrid, despite La Liga’s objections – as the date in which the postponed Clasico should be played,” La Liga said in a statement.“We are studying the documentation that we have recently received regarding the process in which the decision was taken.“This is in order to evaluate taking possible legal action and against whom it should be tabled, before the relevant and opportune public organisations or legal organisms.”Barcelona and Real Madrid disagreed with La Liga’s earlier call to switch the game to Madrid.Catalonia is a semi-autonomous region in north-east Spain and in a referendum on 1 October 2017, declared illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court, around 90% of Catalan votes cast backed independence. Turnout was 43%.The nine separatist leaders were convicted of sedition over their role in the referendum and handed jail sentences of between nine and 13 years by Spain’s Supreme Court.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram

When the finalists of the boys’ Class Three high jump final were announced at the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletic Championships at the National Stadium yesterday, all eyes were on Cayman-born high jumper and the Class Three champion and record holder, Calabar High’s Lamar Reid. Not many had their eyes on the Herbert Morrison’s pair of Antonio Hanson and Javier Hall, who both jumped 1.85 metres to take first and second, respectively, and relegate the defending champion, Reid — who scaled 1.75m — to third. Gold medallist Hanson said many people knew of their potential after both jumped personal bests of 1.90 metres at the St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) meet earlier this year, but no one expected them to take the top positions. “People knew we jumped 1.90m at STETHS so they were looking out for us, but they never expected us to win. I knew it would have been hard for us because no one was looking out for us, everyone was looking out for Lamar Reid, the record holder to take this event,” said Hanson. “But we trained hard, trained together and fed off each other’s energy and we came out here and we won … and I expect to beat him (Reid) even if he jumped higher because when he did the last jump I didn’t feel the vibes to jump anymore,” he told The Gleaner. Hall said he expected a tougher fight from Reid. “We expected to win and we came out to win, but he (Reid) never put up the fight we expected so there was no competition. But it is a joy taking back home the gold and silver,” he added. Reid said it was just a bad day. “I feel very bad, I expected to win. But the other team won because I had a bad day today,” he said.

Manual TransferSo, I may have told a white lie in the introduction — claiming that I only have Windows systems. I do, have a decade-old MacBook hiding under the storage cabinet that I use to test Mac-specific Premiere Pro presets. That being said, it takes an incredibly long time to boot up, and just as long to perform a regular task. Offloading 320gb of footage onto this machine wasn’t practical, nor was it an option since all cards had to be ready for use again later in the evening. However, if the MacBook loaded faster and transferred at a reasonable speed, of course, I could offload the footage, then connect an exFAT drive to move the footage to the editing station. But that in itself is three transfers of 320gb and would take some time.Alternatively, to reduce post-shoot stress and avoid all of the above, take better care than I did when choosing the format of your card.Looking for more video production tips and tricks? Yeah, we did too. Here’s are a couple of ways you can fix it.I’m even not going to hide behind a pretense here. I made this mistake last week, and after connecting the CFast Card reader to my Windows computer to see that it was not reading the card, I thought I was about to be on the phone politely asking the client to return to reshoot the whole day because the card had corrupted after the final shot. Then, I remembered that the Ursa Mini asks you which system format you want for the CFast Card when you start a new project. In the heat of the moment, I had not chosen exFAT and accidentally selected OS X Extended, and since I only have Windows systems, I was out of luck. Thankfully, some companies have foreseen such events and have release software that will connect an OS X Extended formatted card or drive to your PC.Image via Peter Gudella. Are you unsure about the difference between the two formats? It comes down to journaling. According to Tom Patrick of Macintosh-Data-Recovery.com,Journaling is a Mac OS X feature that is extremely helpful in protecting the system against the problems that arises due to power failures, hardware failures and directory corruptions. When the journaling is enabled on Mac, it keeps record entries of the changes to the files present on the disk. These entries are maintained in a special type of data structure called ‘Journal.’Therefore, Mac OS X Extended (HFS+) is the recommended recording format. In the (unlikely) circumstance that your media storage becomes corrupted, journaled data is more accessible for recovery, whereas exFAT does not support journaling. However, Mac OS X Extended is only natively supported by Mac OS, whereas both Mac OS and Windows support exFAT. Like I said, there are programs on the market that can help you get your footage onto a windows system. There are even a few tutorials on how to dive deep into the catacombs of your pc to alter some code to show the connected drive, but to keep things simple, we’re going to look at just two applications: HFSExplorere and MacDrive. As a side note, while I wrote this article for those who have incorrectly formatted their camera’s media storage, all of the solutions presented herein are viable for standard flash and disk drives.MacDrive MacDrive from Media Four is a $50 application, and it does a lot more than connect Mac-formatted drives to your Windows pc. You can repair the drive, reformat it (including back to exFAT), create and partition Mac disks, and so on. The most beneficial factor for me is that upon installing the software, much like a RAW or audio codec, the CFast card drive was viewable in my Windows directory, and I didn’t even have to open the software.Image via Mediafour. While there is a price tag attached to the software, you do get a five-day free trial. It’s common for many companies to offer a redacted version for the trial use of the software; you can convert five files but no more, you can apply a grade but can’t export, and so forth. However, MacDrive offers full use of the software for five days, and then you have to purchase the full version. Hopefully, I won’t be in the position of trying to import footage from an OS X Extended drive again, but if I did, MacDrive would be worth the price.HFSExplorerHFSExplorer is a free application, but it is slightly more complicated than MacDrive. It also requires Java, which many have grown weary of installing due to security issues. However, that’s the price you pay for free software. Unlike MacDrive, you won’t be able to view the connected drive in your file directory, and you will have to access the files through the software itself. To do so, hit File > Load File System From Device, and then extract to a new destination. That seems easy, right? Well, this is why I said it’s slightly more complicated than MacDrive — because it’s slightly troublesome loading a file system when you can’t see it. Therefore, you will need to autodetect the drive. If you’re having trouble following along, I suggest watching this tutorial from Raynel Gonzalez.
