Idaho teen helps rescue avalanche survivor trapped 9 feet under snow

first_imgiStock(KELLOGG, Idaho) — Rescue efforts concluded on Tuesday after an avalanche trapped inbound skiers at Silver Mountain Resort, Idaho. Two people were killed but five were rescued.Among those scouring the slopes as part of the rescue effort was 17-year-old Blaine Goodner, who along with his father and ski patrol searched for survivors in Idaho’s first significant avalanche in nearly 15 years.“Everyone was kind of calm about it — like, they knew that they couldn’t be frantic, and they knew what was happening. They knew how many people were there, and they just needed to come together and do what they needed to do to find them,” Goodner told ABC affiliate KXLY in an interview.Goodner said that during his search he came across a woman who was half-buried and said she was with three additional skiers.“We probed with 10-foot poles and just did a line, up and down the avalanche until we found them all,” Goodner told KXLY. “One of the people she was riding with was the last person we found … 9 feet under, and was still alive and completely fine.”On the morning of the avalanche, the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center issued an avalanche warning for North Idaho mountains but the advisory didn’t apply to ski mountains.“Me and my dad talked while we were on our way [to the avalanche], we were like ‘The odds of someone being still alive after an hour under there are pretty slim,’” Goodner told KXLY.Silver Mountain remained closed on Wednesday, the resort announced in a Facebook post.Copyright © 2020, ABC Audio. Jurgen Klopp reveals how he reacted to Manchester City’s victory over Arsenal

While the Reds look certain to end their painful 30-year wait for the title, Klopp is remaining grounded about the situation and has been quick to rubbish any comparisons to some of the great English teams of the past. center_img City swept Arsenal aside at the Etihad in their first game back (Picture: Getty)The German predicts the likes of City, United and Chelsea will all be ready to provide stiff competition next season, with the Premier League stronger than it ever has been among the top teams.AdvertisementAdvertisementADVERTISEMENT‘I don’t think it is possible to dominate anymore, to be honest,’ the Liverpool head coach said ahead of this weekend’s Merseyside derby.‘United had a pretty good combination, with an exceptional manager with a super eye for players and fantastic timing for how long you need a player in the team.‘The replacements he [Ferguson] got were always exceptional — and there was the money, too. UN Says Virus Will Cause Supply Shortages in Caribbean

first_img 256 Views   no discussions CoronavirusInternationalLifestyleNewsRegional UN Says Virus Will Cause Supply Shortages in Caribbean by: – February 13, 2020 Share Tweet Share Share Sharing is caring! (SKN Observer) A senior official of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says Latin America and Caribbean countries (LAC) will suffer disruptions to their supply chains as Chinese production of goods has come as a result of the coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak that has killed more than 1,000 people in the Asian country.“Notably, today the Chinese government announced that it will delay reporting its January trade data. Commodity prices will also likely be impacted by a slowdown of the Chinese economy. Chinese oil demand, for example, is already being reported to have dropped by 20 per cent by some news outlets,” said Luis F Lopez-Calva, the UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.Lopez-Calva, who is also the UN Assistant Secretary-General, said that resilience is one of the main pillars of UNDP’s regional and Caribbean narrative and key foundation to promoting sustainable development in the region.“History demonstrates that in the region volatility is the norm and not the exception, and that the development trajectories of countries are not monotonic. Resilience is the ability to return to a predetermined path of development in the shortest possible time after suffering from an adverse shock.”He said that a new source of potential volatility has emerged and while it is too early to fully grasp its impact, a recent threat to the macroeconomic stability of the region is the 2019-nCoV.“How strong will the impact of the virus be on Chinese growth, how it will translate to a slowdown in the region, and how prepared is the region to weather these impacts, are all questions to be determined,” he said, noting that “what we know so far is that the coronavirus is spreading at a rapid pace and has resulted in a halt of economic activity in China, as the government limits the mobility in and out of the country”.He said while more than 31,000 have been infected, over 600 casualties and cases reported in 28 countries, “it is very likely that the impact of the virus on Chinese growth and commodity prices will represent a shock to the region”.Lopez-Calva said Latin America and the Caribbean is significantly exposed to China, as economic relations between the two have soared in the past decades, particularly through trade and FDI and lending. He said trade between China and LAC increased from US$12 billion in 2000 to US$306 billion in 2018 and is indeed Latin America’s second-largest trading partner. He said three years ago China represented already nine per cent of Latin America’s total exports and 18.4 per cent of total imports.Similarly, foreign direct investment (FDI) and lending from China have surged in Latin America and the Caribbean over the past decade.Between 2005 and 2017, China’s investment in the region represented five per cent of total FDI, more than US$90 billion.According to Inter-American Dialogue, China has positioned over US$141 billion in loans into the region since 2005, which represents more than the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the CAF Development Bank of Latin America combined.“The full extent of the impact of the coronavirus will ultimately depend on how well the outbreak is contained, but it is expected that Chinese growth in the first quarter of the year to fall sharply and rebound later in the year,” Lopez-Calva said. New Biomimetics Stories

first_imgHere are some new ways scientists are imitating plants and animals to understand their designs and make new products.Polymer Breakthrough Inspired by Trees and Ancient Celtic Knots (Science Daily).  “A new slow-motion method of controlling the synthesis of polymers, which takes inspiration from both trees and Celtic Knots, opens up new possibilities in areas including medical devices, drug delivery, elastics and adhesives.”Ant studies to aid design of search and rescue robots (BBC News).  Stick your finger in sand and the hole fills back in.  Somehow, fire ants can make narrow tunnels in sand—any kind of sand or soil, even sand composed of artificial glass beads.  A video clip in the article shows fire ants constructing narrow tunnels not much wider than their own bodies, allowing them to catch themselves to prevent falling in vertical orientations.  Nick Gavish at Georgia Tech wants to learn how they do it.  He envisions search-and-rescue operations taking advantage of loose rubble to build passageways for victims.  So he is going to the ant to distil “the principles by which ants and other animals manipulate complex environments.”Moth-Inspired Nanostructures Take the Color out of Thin Films (Science Daily).  We’ve learned in previous biomimetics entries about enhancing colors with “photonic crystals,” structural designs found on butterfly wings.  The reverse effect—diminishing reflections—can also be achieved structurally, by cancelling out wavelengths through destructive interference.  That’s how a moth’s eye works – and scientists at North Carolina State are “mimicking that concept” to improve the performance of solar cells.Snake’s ultra-black spots may aid high-tech quest (PhysOrg) – and that quest is “to create the ultimate light-absorbing material.”  How does the snake illustrate the ultimate?  “The West African Gaboon viper, one of the largest in Africa and a master of camouflage, has dark spots in the geometrical pattern of its skin that are deep, velvety black and reflect very little light.” the article says. That’s because “Interwoven with white- and brown-coloured scales that are very reflective, this creates a high contrast that renders the snake difficult to spot on the richly-patterned rainforest floor.”  Following the “snake’s nanotechnology” could prove beneficial to man: “The micro-ornamentation on the snake’s velvet black scales is a further example that the same physical law applies to both nature and technology and leads consequently to similar constructions.”DNA-Guided Assembly Yields Novel Ribbon-Like Nanostructures (Science Daily).  DNA continues to be an ideal molecule to work with.  It acts in unique ways due to its small size.  “Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory have discovered that DNA ‘linker’ strands coax nano-sized rods to line up in way [sic] unlike any other spontaneous arrangement of rod-shaped objects.”  What cannot be done at the macro scale can work for nano-fabrication.Advanced Biological Computer Developed (Science Daily).  We’ve reported on DNA computing before, but now, “Using only biomolecules (such as DNA and enzymes), scientists at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have developed and constructed an advanced biological transducer, a computing machine capable of manipulating genetic codes, and using the output as new input for subsequent computations.”  Biological computing is attractive because it can interact directly with living things.  Maybe that will someday be a cause for alarm, but for now, they have benefits to human health in mind.  One statement in the article that emphasizes the close ties between natural and artificial computing could have been written by an advocate of intelligent design:“All biological systems, and even entire living organisms, are natural molecular computers. Every one of us is a biomolecular computer, that is, a machine in which all components are molecules “talking” to one another in a logical manner. The hardware and software are complex biological molecules that activate one another to carry out some predetermined chemical tasks. The input is a molecule that undergoes specific, programmed changes, following a specific set of rules (software) and the output of this chemical computation process is another well defined molecule.”A look back at the first biomimetics:  Velcro is one of the classic cases of the imitation of nature.  At Live Science, Ryan Goodrich told the story of Swiss engineer and amateur mountaineer George de Mestral, who conceived the natural “zipperless zipper” by observing cockleburs on a hike in 1948.  The article reveals where the name came from, and brings the story up to the present by mentioning a few of the many applications of this highly useful product that was “Inspired by Nature.”Most of these instances of biomimetic technology have not been mentioned in previous entries.  That suggests that much, much more awaits to be discovered.  Why not join the fun, and look around your yard for ideas?  What solutions to real-life problems have been solved by plants or animals around you?  Maybe you could become the next millionnaire, plagiarizing what the Creator already invented.  Give Him the glory and He will not mind the imitation. The quote above is a keeper.  Show that to someone who thinks intelligent design is a science stopper or a religious concept.  On the contrary, I.D. is the only way to understand biology in the 21st century.  ID ID -> IDEA (meaning, IDentify Intelligent Design as a forward-looking idea). Huge crowds at World Cup fan fests

first_imgExtra public viewing areas Fifa Fan Fests™, organised at 16 venues around the world, played host to more than a million supporters during the first six days of the biggest sporting party in the world. More than 800 000 fans in 10 South African venues and more than 400 000 fans in Rome, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro, followed matches on the giant screens at the fan fests, Fifa said in a statement this week. Entertainment is normally provided before kick-off, in the general party atmosphere that prevails at the fan fests. The international fan fests are organised at six iconic locations around the world: Olympic Square in Berlin, Piazza di Siena, in Vila Borghese, Rome, Les Jardins du Trocadero in Paris, Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Zocalo in Mexico City and Darling Harbour in Sydney. Source: BuaNews Sunny Durban attracts crowds Wednesday’s second match involving Bafana Bafana saw a further 300 000 fans visiting fan fests in South Africa and around the globe. The maximum capacity was reached in almost all venues every time the respective national team played. Support for national teams The best attended venues over the course of the last six days were sunny Durban, with 200 000 spectators, and Paris with more than 100 000 spectators. The organisers in the different venues used local media to inform the fans in case the venue reached its maximum capacity and fans were advised to arrive early or listen to media to avoid disappointment. The highest numbers of spectators so far have been reached on the opening match day on 11 June, with more than 400 000 spectators across all venues. On that day, the best visited site in South Africa was Johannesburg, with more than 70 000 spectators, while the busiest international site was Mexico City with more than 50 000 spectators. The fan fest is a gathering point for fans, free of charge and open all day. High quality giant screens and sound and lighting systems ensure a great experience while fans watch 2010 Fifa World Cup™ matches. Further, some Host Cities have created overspill areas which were either areas on-site – by using a second screen – or public viewing areas off-site to decentralise people if required. Many venues in South Africa reached their maximum capacities on Wednesday, when the South African team played against Uruguay. More than 65 000 fans were counted at the fan fest in Durban, and 50 000 fans were counted at the international fan fest at Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana beach the day before, when the Brazilian team played. 18 June 2010last_img read more

Afro-optimism ‘must become action’

first_img9 May 2011African countries should now focus on converting optimism in the continent’s future into action, business and government leaders said during the closing session of the 21st World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town on Friday.“The mood has changed from thinking of Africa as a forgotten continent to Africa as a continent that holds hope,” said Bank of Botswana governor Linah Mohohlo. “But we cannot afford to be complacent.”Mohohlo called on African countries to be much more welcoming to investors and to “quickly learn how to manage the risks” that would inevitably increase as more international capital flowed into the continent’s economies.“What we have to pursue with vigour is inclusive growth that will generate additional opportunities and contribute immensely towards poverty reduction.“And we must include women,” Mohohlo added, “because when you educate a woman, you educate a village, a society, a country and, ultimately, the continent.”Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Added Hailemariam Desalegn said the continent needed to build capacity at all levels in order “to deliver and discharge its policies and responsibilities”.Nestle board chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe said the first question was “whether Africa’s economic boom will allow it to break the cycle of poverty”, while KPMG International chairman Timothy Flynn said the real challenge was “how do we accomplish the things [we have to do] and get people to come together.”Flynn said that, in light of what he had learned about the increasing efforts to deepen African regionalisation, he would accelerate the integration of his company’s businesses across the continent.Eskom Holdings chairman Mpho Makwana said African countries should focus on developing their skills and human resources, especially by harnessing the talents of Africans in the Diaspora. “We need to make the building of robust private sectors an urgent priority and promote true entrepreneurship, because that is how jobs are created,” Makwana said.Oando Nigeria group chief executive Jubril Tinubu said it was also critical for African countries to improve their educational systems, in order to ensure that they had the skills they would need to pursue the opportunities that were emerging.Source: World Economic Forumlast_img read more

Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the Asia-Africa Summit 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia

first_imgAddress by his excellency, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, to the Asia-Africa Summit 2015, Jakarta, IndonesiaYour Excellency President Joko WidodoYour Excellencies the Heads of State and GovernmentYour Excellencies the Heads of delegationLadies and Gentlemen,I wish to express, on my own behalf and on behalf of the delegation of the Republic of South Africa, appreciation and gratitude for the hospitality and courtesies accorded by the President, Government and People of the Indonesia since our arrival in this beautiful city of Jakarta. His Excellency, President Joko Widodo, and the Government of Indonesia deserve to be applauded for convening this conference at this crucial juncture in the history of the world. The year 2015 marks the confluence of both the 60th anniversary of the spirit of Bandung and the adoption of South Africa’s premier document, the Freedom Charter, and the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.Your Excellencies,60 years ago in 1955, as the shackles of colonialism were being cast off, the founding fathers of our liberation movements of Africa and Asia convened in Bandung. They gathered here in Indonesia to reflect on the role of emerging nations in securing peace in the global arena, achieving economic development, and assigning colonialism and racism to the dustbin of history. The core principles of the spirit of the Bandung Conference were political self-determination, mutual respect for sovereignty, non-aggression, non-interference in internal affairs and equality. While we celebrate that much of the noble ideals of Bandung have been accomplished, we must guard against complacency. The spirit of Bandung remains unrealized until we universally eradicate poverty, underdevelopment, inequality, extremism and racial and gender discrimination.Your Excellencies,South Africa’s international relations philosophy is premised on the principles of the Freedom Charter launched on 26 June 1955 by the African National Congress, a few months after the return of our two delegates from the Bandung Conference. Our Freedom Charter demands that “There shall be peace and friendship”.As a result, our posture is based on the commitment to the struggle for a humane, just, equitable, democratic and free world, in pursuit of a better Africa and a better world.Your Excellencies,This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the United Nations. As we observe this milestone, the world remains confronted by the challenges of unequal development and conflict in many regions and within states. A further challenge is that the multilateral financial and political institutions remain untransformed. In this connection, South Africa adds its voice to the calls made at this historic gathering to fast-track the transformation of the global governance system. This particularly applies to the United Nations Security Council. We need to reflect on the importance of an inclusive, transparent, reformed, strengthened, and effective multilateral system that is able to better address the urgent global challenges of sustainable development today. The reform that urgently needs to be implemented must reflect the realities of the new global paradigm. It surely is incongruous that the majority of the world’s population is only periodically represented at the apex of the global institution.Your Excellencies,The plight of the Palestinian people remains a blight on our collective conscience. It is incumbent that we redouble our efforts to bring peace to that troubled Holy Land and have two independent and viable states of Palestine and Israel existing in peace with each other and with the whole world. We are convinced that only sincere negotiations between the Palestine and Israel can secure the peace and security that we all yearn for. We therefore call for an end to the siege on Gaza and an immediate end to the expansion of settlements.Your Excellencies,Let me once again express our sincere gratitude to the Government and People of Indonesia for your hospitality during our time here. I also wish to extend a personal word of gratitude to President Joko Widodo, for his visionary leadership in convening this special occasion.I commend you on this great initiative, which is testament once more of the strong solidarity that exists between the Governments and People of Africa and Asia.Long Live the Spirit of Bandung . Legacy IT Vendors Shoot The Sales Messenger

first_imgIT + Project Management: A Love Affair Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Related Posts Tags:#cloud#data#enterprise IT#IBM#Oracle#Redmonk#SAP#Software#Stephen O’Grady Perhaps the problem isn’t the sales teams’ execution – a “lack of urgency we sometimes see in the sales force” as Oracle president Safra Catz opined – but rather the very foundation for legacy enterprise software sales: the software license. It’s The Data, StupidAs Redmonk analyst Stephen O’Grady persuasively argues, the value of software as software has been declining for years. Value has been shifting to data, and software has either become free (open source) or distributed services made available over the web (cloud). Software revenue growth for the big vendors, not surprisingly, has slowed to a trickle, according to IDC data. This shifting emphasis away from software sales, toward data-based services, has crowned Google as the market capitalization leader among its “peers,” a trend that will likely continue for many years: Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of…center_img 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now In fact, as O’Grady highlights, among the PWC global top-100 software vendors, none of the top-20 was founded after 1989. He concludes: “The data is clear: while there is substantial money in software, the difficulty of employing it as a primary revenue mechanism is increasing.”A Flight From Software To CloudFor this reason, we’ve seen IBM and others diversifying out of software, bulking up in services, differentiated hardware, and more, as PWC’s segmentation of software revenue among the world’s top-20 software vendors indicates:Source: PWC, 2013.Such a shift won’t happen overnight, and will be painful along the way. Very painful. For example, SAP has been struggling to become a cloud-friendly company, and it’s having deleterious effects on its earnings. As Wells Fargo analyst Jason Maynard spotlighted in a recent SAP research note, “increasing demand for cloud solutions is creating a negative drag on software license revenue growth.”Having lived through this at Novell, when we had to replace super high-margin NetWare revenue with lower-margin, lower-priced SUSE Linux revenue, I can state with some certainty that it’s a long, tough road (fortunately, one that SUSE seems finally to have completed). Still, some companies, IBM in particular, have managed to make the transition, though no legacy IT vendor has gone to the lengths that Google, Facebook, Salesforce and other new-breed “tech” companies have, essentially making the sales function an automated credit card transaction over the web. This friction-free, license-free model is the future. In this new world, purchasing power moves away from CIOs to developers, in the case of open source, and to line of business executives, in the case of cloud. Where it’s not moving, and likely never will again, is to the top lines of the legacy IT vendors. Software has become a service, not a big revenue driver. That fact won’t change, and shooting the sales messenger won’t help.Image courtesy of Shutterstock. Matt Asay Who knew that IBM’s sales team was so bad? Or Oracle’s? Or Tibco’s? In a string of earnings calls, each of these titans of enterprise software put their respective sales teams to the sword, blaming them for the companies’ poor earnings reports. If only it were that easy.Shooting The Sales MessengerWhile we’ve talked about the decline of legacy software vendors for years, it’s only now that the rise of cloud and open source are showing up in the earnings reports of legacy IT vendors. First it was Oracle, signaling an end to the traditional enterprise software licensing model. Then Tibco.
