Bright Star kicks off Brock winter film series

The winter season of the Brock University Film Series (BUFS) opens with an emotional tale about a famous poet and his muse.Bright Star, directed by Australian Jane Campion (The Piano, Portrait of a Lady), depicts a romance between John Keats – who died at age 25 – and Fanny Brawne. It will show at the Empire Theatre on Wednesday.The film is one of many BUFS has been able to access as a member of Film Circuit, which is a division of the Toronto International Film Festival, said Amanda Bishop, BUFS operations manager.“This is the time of the year when movie-going is most exciting,” she said.“Critics have made their ‘Best of 2009’ lists, we’re hearing buzz about the big awards ceremonies, and more and more festival films are available to groups like us.”This season will also feature the films A Serious Man, Good Hair and An Education.A Serious Man is the latest film from the Coen Brothers. It is about a man struggling with questions of fate and family, and a brother who refuses to move out of the house.Good Hair is a documentary by comedian Chris Rock, whose daughter asked him why she “didn’t have good hair.” The film explores the answer to that question, and its implications for society and black women.An Education, starring Peter Sarsgaard and Carey Mulligan, features a romance between a 16-year-old girl and an older man who sets out to teach her about life.BUFS screens Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. at the Empire Theatre, Pen Centre.
